Radhekrishna! This website is very useful. I am an ardent devotee of Lord Sri Guruvayurappa and recite narayaneeyam, Sundara Gaandam, Lalitha Sahasranamam and other slokas as advised by my parents and elders. I have a question about Rahukaalam/Yema Kandam. Why is it said that we shouldnt start things/travel etc during these hours? What is the significance of observing these? Also do the same timings followed in India are applicable throughout the world? In US, we have different time zones etc. and sunrise is earlier than 6 am or later around 8:30 am during winter and sunset is after 9 pm in summer and around 3 pm in winter. Please clarify. Thank you very much. Srividhya Krishna

Answer: Rahu Kaalam and Yama Gandam are calculated from the time of sun rise. Based on the sun rise timings, it differs place to place. for example, if the sun rise is 6.00 am in Chennai on a Monday, then the Rahu kalam starting timing is 7.30 am; the same would change to Mumbai where there is about 20 to 40 minutes difference during seasons. If the sun rise is at 7.30 then the Rahu kaalam should be from from 9.00 am! One has to take the local timings for calculating the Rahu kalam and Yama Gandam, that is to be calculated from the sun rise timings and adjusted accordingly.

When the Earths rotation comes about a specific angle to the Solar path, the radiations and ultra violet rays are excessively passed on to the Earth. These specific timings are bracketed as Rahu Kalam and Yama Gandam; doing any auspicious functions or starting long journey during these timings are likely to blind ones brain neurons. This might cause harm to oneself so it was better advised to avoid the Rahukalam & Yamagandam. During the timing of Gulikan, it is said that the rays passed on to earth is very conducive and has cooling stimulations in the brain neuron chips. Thus Gulikan timing is recommended to start any auspicious function. However, for regular jobs and routines this does not apply!!

Though the Vedic reliance and practices were that of Indian Origin and the same was observed since it came into existence, one cannot predict the values it offers or gaurantee for its benefits or loss at other locations of the universe! However, I recommend persons to follow the local standard timings to convert these to their local stations.
