Answer: During the entire period of fifteen days, it is recommended to avoid usage of restricted vegetable items and use only recommended ones. Raw Banana, Ladies Finger, Sour Gourd, Snake Gourd etc. are few of the recommended ones. (It is just like a Srardha cookings). Bengal gram (Thuvar Dal or Thuvaram Paruppu) is totally to be avoided. Instead green gram is to be used. (Payatham paruppu).

Sleeping in cusshion beds, usage of pillows, using luxury items, scents etc. are to be stopped. Also, to avoid sex during these days. Hair cut and oil bath too to be avoided. Needless to say no soap either, even organic soap. Those who perform the Pithru Tharppanam can perform the pithru tharppanam on all days; if not possible, at least one day during these time, or on ones pithrus thithis, they should perfom the Tharpanam. On the Pithru paksha amavasya, in addition to regular Tharpanam to Mathru/Pithru vargam, oblations to be offered to Garunya Pithrus too. Please read details about this in reply to Gaya Srardham in this same page.

It is widely believed that during Malayapaksha days the Maharishis, the other Jeevathmas, the Devas & Devaganas, the pithrus along with their other departed relatives souls, all come to the earth in invisible form known as Sookshama Deha and assemble along the sacred river beds, the sea shores viz. in Gaya, Rameswaram, and other rivers banks like Ganga, Bhavani, Kaveri, Narmada, Krishna, Godavari, Thriveni sangamam and many other riverbeds. These places are known as Punya Nadhis or Sacred Rivers and has the power and curative effects for many of our sins and ills. So by performing the Tharpana on these days, one gets the blessings from all the roopas of the Vasur, Rudhras, Adithya, and Pithrudevas, and other Deva Ganas. So offering a Tharpanam during this time is given multiple benefits and this is for all Hindus, irrespective of their caste, creed, sect or sub-sect. etc.
